Job Duties: 
Under the general direction of the Children’s Services Librarian, the Children’s Programmer provides library services and creates educational programming for children through grade 5. The Children’s Programmer conducts both onsite and offsite programming, interacting heavily with the public and with other staff. A Bachelor’s degree in early childhood development or elementary education, or combination of some post-secondary education and relevant work experience is required. Experience with children’s programming and/or children’s literature is preferred.

This position generally has a set schedule, but program needs take priority. At least once a month throughout the year, this position will be required to staff events that occur outside the regular schedule.

Responsibilities:

  1. To create, plan, prepare, and facilitate a wide variety of activities and programs for children and their families with a focus on school-aged children.
  2. To set up passive programming at the Main branch for children and families of all ages.
  3. To organize, maintain, prepare, and order materials utilized for crafts and activities.
  4. To establish positive relationships with individuals at schools and other organizations in the county in order to provide library services and programming through outreach services.
  5. To present information about Library services and programs to individuals and groups in the Library and conduct outreach to daycares, schools, and other facilities as directed.
  6. To manage the outreach services provided by the Children’s Department.
  7. To work the Children’s circulation desk as scheduled.
  8. To provide basic reference and readers’ advisory services at the Children’s Library desk.
  9. To provide assistance during annual Summer Reading events and Summer Reading Program activities.
  10. To know and follow library policy and procedures.
  11. To meet regularly with the Children’s Librarian and communicate effectively with other Library staff to ensure the efficient completion of departmental tasks.
  12. To provide weekend and evening programs.
  13. To assist at large scale programs that may be offered in the evening, weekend, or at a branch location.

 

Qualifications / Experience: 
 A Bachelor’s degree in early childhood development or elementary education, or combination of some post-secondary education and relevant work experience is required. Experience with children’s programming and/or children’s literature is preferred. Must be able to meet the requirements for Library Experience certification established by the Kentucky State Board for the Certification of Librarians. Basic computer experience with standard office software is required including but not limited to: Microsoft Office including Publisher, Google including Google Documents & Google Calendar, email, and internet searching. A valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving history is required as well as personal transportation that can be used for business travel.

Employee may need to carry, push, pull, or lift up to 30 pounds. Proper lifting techniques required. Push and pull fully loaded (50-100 pounds) book trucks. Must have ability to work under pressure, coordinating multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and meet firm deadlines.
